Support options for mistreated theatre workers

Have you experienced exploitation in theatre internships or short-term contracts and are struggling with resulting trauma? Because personal identity and sense of selfhood can be intertwined with the work, the fallout from mistreatment can be complex.

Here are some options for where you can seek support:

·      Behind the Scenes charity offers support for entertainment technology professionals, both financial and mental health resources.

·      The Actors’ Fund is not just for actors! They offer a wide range of support services for performing arts professionals, from mental health and counseling resources to disability and eldercare support.

·      Open Counseling primarily connects people with crisis hotlines across the US, but they also can match you with free or low-cost online therapists and maintain a list of “warmlines” for callers not in immediate crisis who would still like to talk with someone about an upsetting experience and receive emotional support.

  1. Thank you so much for posting this. Having “grown up “ in theatre there are so many times when even knowing there was somewhere to reach out to without the fear of reprisals or judgement would have made a huge difference.

    1. Agreed. I find myself continually shocked as a discover all the wildly abusive treatment I endured in this field because people I looked up to told me crap about "paying your dues" and other gaslighting BS.
